Cationic bitumen emulsions: spray, stable and premix grades

Igugu Industries supplies cationic bitumen emulsions in three grade families: spray grades CRS 60, CRS 65 and CRS 70 for chip seals and reseals, the stable grade CSS 60 for slurry and stabilisation, and the premix grades CMS 60 and CMS 65 for cold premix. All are supplied to the relevant SANS 4001 specification (SANS 4001-BT4 covers cationic road emulsions) and to your project specification, in 200 L drums or bulk depending on the grade, delivered to all nine provinces.

Cationic spray grade bitumen emulsion (CRS 60, CRS 65, CRS 70)

A rapid-setting cationic bitumen emulsion for spray seals, with 60, 65 or 70% binder. Cationic emulsions are preferred for sprayed seals because they adhere well to most South African aggregates; CRS 65 and CRS 70 carry more binder to reduce run-off.

  • The first (tack) spray on seals and Cape seals.
  • Diluted, as a cover spray on single and double seals and Cape seals.
  • Curing membrane on cement- or lime-stabilised layers.
  • Diluted fog spray, where the specification calls for a cationic emulsion.
  • Hand-spray work, with CRS 60.

Also written as: CRS 60, CRS 65, CRS 70, KRS65, CAT 65, cationic spray grade, chipseal emulsion, SANS 4001-BT4.

Cationic stable grade bitumen emulsion (CSS 60)

A 60% cationic slow-set (stable grade) bitumen emulsion for machine-mixed slurry and for stabilisation. It suits machine mixing, breaks chemically and has a lower water requirement. Test its breaking rate with the job’s aggregate, filler and water before work starts.

Grade
CSS 60 (60% binder)
Specification
The relevant SANS 4001 specification (SANS 4001-BT4 covers cationic road emulsions), and your project specification

Mixing
By slurry machine or recycler
Supplied as

Where it is used

  • Machine-mixed slurry.
  • Bitumen stabilising agent for bitumen-stabilised material (BSM), where the BOQ asks for a 60% cationic emulsion.
  • Stabilising aggregates that do not suit an anionic emulsion, such as acidic aggregates.
  • BOQ lines that ask for “stable grade 60% emulsion (cationic)”.

Also written as: CSS 60, cationic stable grade, stable grade 60% emulsion (cationic), 60% cationic emulsion, cationic slow-set emulsion, cationic emulsion for stabilisation, SANS 4001-BT4.

To quote, send us

  • What it is for: slurry or stabilisation.
  • Litres, and the pack: 200 L drums, 1,000 L flowbins or bulk.
  • For stabilisation: the layer volume, the emulsion percentage from the mix design, and the parent rock or aggregate type.

Cationic premix grade bitumen emulsion (CMS 60, CMS 65)

A medium-setting cationic bitumen emulsion for making cold premix and patching mixes without heating. It is mixed cold with suitable aggregate, in a mixer or on site, and works best with aggregate that has little fine material.

Where it is used

  • Cold premix made without heating.
  • Patching mixes, mixed cold in a mixer or on site.
  • RFQs for “KMS60 cold mix bitumen” in 200 L drums.

Also written as: CMS 60, CMS 65, KMS60, premix grade emulsion, cationic medium set, KMS60 cold mix bitumen, cold mix bitumen 200 L drum, premix emulsion.

Grades buyers ask for

RFQs and BOQs write the same cationic grades in different ways. These all map to a grade we quote; if yours reads differently, send the line and we tell you which grade it is.

KRS60
CRS 60, spray grade
KRS65, CAT 65, 65% cationic
CRS 65, spray grade
70% cationic
CRS 70, spray grade
Stable grade 60% (cationic)
CSS 60, stable grade
KMS60, KMS65
CMS 60 and CMS 65, premix grade

How cationic emulsions are supplied

  • CRS 60, CRS 65, CSS 60, CMS 60 and CMS 65: 200 L drums or bulk, with 1,000 L flowbins on request.
  • CRS 70: bulk.
  • Store at ambient temperature and protect from freezing.
  • Never mix a cationic emulsion with an anionic one such as SS60: flush tanks between them when you change from one type to the other.

Questions buyers ask

Questions about cationic emulsions.

Which cationic emulsion grades does Igugu supply?

Igugu Industries supplies the cationic spray grades CRS 60, CRS 65 and CRS 70, the stable grade CSS 60 and the premix grades CMS 60 and CMS 65, to the relevant SANS 4001 specification and your project specification. For seals that call for a modified binder, Igugu also supplies SC-E1 and SC-E2.

Our RFQ asks for KRS65 or CAT 65. Can Igugu quote?

Yes. KRS65 and CAT 65 are buyers’ names for the 65% cationic spray grade, CRS 65. Send the RFQ number, the closing date, the litres or the number of 200 L drums and the delivery point, and Igugu Industries quotes CRS 65 against your specification.

Which cationic emulsion is used to make cold premix?

The premix grade: CMS 60 or CMS 65, often written KMS60. It is mixed cold with aggregate, without heating. Igugu Industries supplies it in 200 L drums or bulk, and also supplies ready-made cold mix asphalt in 25 kg bags or bulk.
