Haul road dust suppression and control

Igugu Industries manufactures and supplies haul road dust control four ways: a bitumen-based binder, a lignin sulphonate, polymers and a water extender. Each one means less water, less dust and a firmer running surface for your trucks, and we help you choose the right one for every road on the mine. Delivered to the mine in all nine provinces, in drums, flowbins or bulk, depending on the product.

What better haul roads give you

Haul roads that need less water, raise less dust and run smoother.

Loose, dusty haul roads cost a mine water, fuel, tyres and production time. Managing the dust gives you four things back.

  • Water savingsFewer water-cart trips and less water per kilometre of road. DustBinder Lignin reduces water usage by about 70% a month.
  • Dust controlBetter visibility and site safety, and fewer dust-related stoppages: DustBinder Lignin lowers the risk of Section 54 stoppages.
  • Lower rolling resistanceA firmer, smoother running surface: less fuel and less wear on your trucks.
  • Tyre savingsLess damage from loose material, on a better surface. Inside the tyre, TRP protects the liner and the rim.

Four ways to manage haul road dust, and when to use each

Every road is different: its traffic, its material and how often it changes. Pick by the road, or tell us about your roads and we advise per road.

How the products go on

  • Road binders, through the water cartDustBinder Lignin and DustBinder Bitumen are mixed into the water cart at 50–1,000 L per 10,000 L of water, depending on road and site conditions, and sprayed on the road. Repeat applications of DustBinder Lignin build a stronger layer.
  • Hydrogel, at the fill pointDosed into the water-filled truck by a pre-programmed dosing pump, by hand from 20 L containers, or by a timer-controlled pump on the site’s power, then applied with your normal watering.
  • CRP88, into the road materialSprayed and mixed into the material at 2.5–20 L/m³, then compacted into a water-resistant stabilised layer.
  • RoadBinder, into the layerBy in-situ recycling or central plant mixing, then surfaced with gravel, slurry, chip seal or asphalt.

Buying for a mine

We supply mines and industrial sites directly, and the haul road, dust control and civils contractors who work on them. Tenders and RFQs ask for dust suppression, a dust suppression chemical, a dust palliative or haul road dust control: send the RFQ number, the closing date, the quantities and the delivery point, and we quote every line we supply.

Tell us about your roads

  • Each road’s length and width, and whether it is a primary, secondary, ramp, access or in-pit road.
  • The traffic: vehicles a day and the truck class.
  • Your water carts: their size, how many, and the fills a day.
  • How often you water now, and the road’s surface material.
  • The season, and how long you need dust control.

We advise the product, the dosage and the application for each road, then quote it delivered to the mine.

Technical support

Technical support comes with the supply: product selection, dosage and application guidance for your site. Tell us the job, the material and the specification, and we recommend what to use and how to apply it.

Buying for a tender or RFQ

Igugu Industries is B-BBEE Level 1, 100% black-woman-owned and registered on National Treasury’s Central Supplier Database (CSD). Vendor details and compliance documents are sent on request, with data sheets and safety data sheets for the products on your quote.

Questions buyers ask

Questions about haul road dust control.

Which haul road dust product should we use?

It depends on the road. Igugu Industries suggests DustBinder Bitumen for primary haul roads and access roads; DustBinder Lignin for primary and secondary haul roads, ramps, access roads and in-pit roads; CRP88 or RoadBinder where a road, yard or platform needs a hard, water-resistant bound surface; and Hydrogel for in-pit roads, ramps and secondary routes that change often. Tell us about the road and we advise.

How much water can a haul road dust binder save?

Igugu Industries’ DustBinder Lignin reduces water usage by about 70% a month. It also extends the time between applications, which saves diesel and frees water trucks for other tasks. What you save on your roads depends on the material, the climate and the traffic.

Does dust control lower rolling resistance and tyre wear?

A bound, dust-controlled haul road gives a firmer, smoother running surface: less fuel, less wear on trucks and less tyre damage from loose material. Inside the tyre, Igugu Industries’ TRP protects the liner and the rim against corrosion and helps the tyre run about 10% cooler.

Can the products go through our existing water carts?

Yes for the road binders and the water extender. Igugu Industries’ DustBinder Lignin and DustBinder Bitumen are mixed into the water cart, and Hydrogel is dosed into the cart at the fill point, then applied with your normal watering. CRP88 and RoadBinder go into the road material itself.

What do you need to advise on our haul roads?

Send Igugu Industries each road’s length, width and type, the traffic and truck class, your water carts (size, number and fills a day), how often you water now, the season and how long you need control. We then advise the product, the dosage and the application for each road.
